Very few people know how I got started photographing events. The truth is, it was out of necessity. So, here’s the story, along with a handful of my earliest images — try not to judge me too hard!! π
In June 2000, I took a job working in the special events department of the Exploratorium. It was a relatively new venture for the museum, so while we had a plethora of great images of guests enjoying exhibits, we had dreadfully few that showcased the event spaces, even fewer that did so during an actual event.
The Exploratorium’s in-house photography department didn’t have the resources to help us after hours, so I did what any good little worker bee would do: I took the photos myself.
With my trusty Canon Rebel T1i and 18-55mm kit lens in hand, and a few photo classes under my belt, I was ready to make stunning photos, or so I thought.
Henri Cartier-Bresson once said, “Your first 10,000 photographs are you worst.” Boy was he right! Alas, we needed photos, so I kept shooting. Sorry/not sorry, Explo!
So, why share these cringe worthy old images? Every story has a beginning. This was mine, now ours. It took another nine years before I was confident enough in my skills to strike out on my own. Today, I’m proud and incredibly grateful to work alongside the same talented event professionals I did then, as well as my amazing corporate and non-profit clients, and, of course, my team. Itβs truly a dream.
